On December 7, 2012 Alex Berrios will face off against Eric Utsch at Friday Night Fights (@FridaysFights) in New York. The Haul at St. Paul will play host to the Friday Night Fights season finale and the fight between Alex Berrios and Eric Utsch is one of the featured bouts. Both fights are very technical, but their styles differ quite a bit. Berrios will be moving down a weight class to face Utsch in what should be an entertaining fight for the fans in attendance. Alex was kind enough to take some time from his busy schedule and answer a few questions for Muay Thai Authority.
MTA: You have a fight coming up with Eric Utsch, how familiar are you with Eric?
Alex: I've heard his name before several times and know he's been around fighting for at least as long as I have. I have a positive impression and he seems to be a well-rounded fighter and hardworking.
MTA: You haven't competed since June, is this layoff too long for your liking?
Alex: Not at all. 3-4 fights a year is a comfortable pace for me. I sacrifice a lot to train for a fight. I make sure to do it right and enjoy the hard training at the expense of time normally spent with family, friends, students, and hobbies. So a couple months in between allows to catch up with the other important parts of my life.
MTA: Where do you think you will hold an advantage in this fight with Eric?
Alex: My size may be a plus for me in this fight, but I like to think my technique will stand out as being my best weapon against any opponent.
MTA: Your last fight was in the 180's and now this one is in the 165, is it easier to train for a lighter or higher weight class?
Alex: It all depends on your starting weight difference and the time you have to gain/lose. It's been a crazy couple of years. My sweet spot is 172-175 lbs. 3 out of my last 4 fights have been above my weight class in the 180s and I don't even walk around at that weight. I've had to gain as much as 7 pounds! It's so hard to do when you're training very hard. On the other hand, I had a hell of a time losing weight before because you are on a restricted diet which if not properly implemented can hinder performance and training. I'm very pleased to report that I am well on track weight wise without affecting my training and performance.
MTA: Can we get a prediction for the fight?
Alex: I predict it will be a good technical stand off and not a fight a fan of muay Thai in America would want to miss.
MTA: The year is coming to an end what are your goals for next year on your career?
Alex: Next year I plan to fight just as much or more, so stay tuned. A career in muay Thai can be slowing and I hope to keep sharp and fight against as many talented guys as I can before I hit 60.
MTA: Now most importantly will you be rocking your epic mustache?
Alex: You better believe I'm growing something crazy during Movember! Haha! Can't wait to show off my manly face fur once again! Muay Thai doesn't pay enough to not have fun where you can!
