Justin Grekiewicz and Byoung Ku-Park faced off in a IKKC International Super Lightweight Title fight this past weekend. After it was all said and done, there was no champion as the fight was ruled a draw. Greskiewicz, and most of the spectators thought that he would be announced as the new champion, but that wasn't the case. Justin took some time to address this controversial ruling for MuayThaiAuthority.com.
MTA: When that fight ended were you worried at all that you hadn't done enough to win the fight?
Justin: When the fight ended I was super happy and real pumped. I was all smiles. There was no way in my mind that I hadn't won. I think my opponent actually thought so too.
MTA: Is there any reason you can think of that the judges might have thought Park had done enough to end up with a draw?
Justin: There was a point in the fight that the ref gave me an 8 count. As far judging I can see this giving them a lil confusion. I definitely got caught, but I was throwing a knee, so I was off balance. I think it probably could've been a flash knockdown. But, even the rest of that round, I was controlling him without much difficulty. I think the judges scored that round a 10-8 round, which I really don't think they should have. It's confusing...I won the round, so that's 10-9, but they count me, so 9-9. It's probably the only thing I can think of that could confuse the judges...
But, even so, I really thought that I won every round.
In my mind, I controlled aspect of the fight. I out kicked my opponent, landing a few clean body kicks and a lot of strong leg kicks. I checked almost every one of his kicks. Didn't knee really at all other than the few times we clinched up. I was drawing back and countering with strong straight knees.
I clearly landed dozens of strong elbows, one splitting his eyelid wide open on rd 2. He landed only one elbow which did no damage.
As far as punching, I was far more effective. I landed many punches and clearly out boxed him in my mind. He was swinging, but none of his punches were really landing, and none of them did any damage.
I have gone through it in my head a hundred times, trying to figure out why they judged it the way they did and I still can't figure it out.
MTA: Aside from finishing the fight is there anything you would like to have done different in the fight?
Justin: I really don't know what else I could've done to make it clearer.
MTA: Did you speak with the judges after the fight at all and ask for an explanation?
Justin: I didn't speak to the judges at all.
MTA: What as the first thing that went through your mind when the decision was announced?
Justin: I was really upset and confused when I heard the decision. I really couldn't believe it.
MTA: This was for the IKKC International super lightweight title, have you talked with the WCK about getting another fight with Park or a title shot?
Justin: I talked with the promoter about a rematch. He seemed to think it was a possibility.
MTA: Can you just let everyone know exactly what you think about this decision. Just get it off your chest?
Justin: You know I'm just disappointed. It seems that judging is so inconsistent almost everywhere I fight. I know they have a tough job, but they get paid to have expertise. It's frustrating because you can just never bank on a decision that you agree with
