Bangkok, Thailand -- The Thai Fight 2011 tournament kicked off on Sunday, September 25th. The 154lb (70kg) and the 147lb (67kg) tournaments featured some world class fighters in the opening round such as Buakaw Por. Pramuk, Kem Sitsongpeenong, Vuyisile Colossa and Fabio Pinca.
Fighting in Thailand for the first time in eight years, Buakaw was the night's main attraction. He took on Cameroon's Abdallah Mabel. From the start of the fight it Buakaw controlled the fight and landed his strikes with power. Mabel mocked Buakaw a bit midway through the fight, but it had no effect on him as he continued to press the action and deliver punishment. In the third round Buakaw knocked Mabel down with a counter right, and after Mabel was able to answer the referee's count Buakaw went on an aggressive attack looking to finish. The third and final round ended with Buakaw still attacking, he took home a very dominant decision victory.
Kem Sitsongpeenong faced Alessio Angelo from Italy and it was a short night of work for Kem. From the start of the fight it was clear he was looking to finish, after landing a pair of spinning elbows he delivered with a Sok Phung (forward elbow) that cut Angelo on the crown of his head. The doctor then took a look at the cut and stopped the fight. It was an impressive and dominating first round victory for Kem.
Last years Thai Fight champion, Fabio Pinca, faced Japan's Yokoyama Shigeyuki. Pinca was able to control the fight and was physically a lot stronger than Shigeyuki, but he didn't look quite like himself. Despite not looking as he usually does Pinca scored when he pressed the action and countered nicely when Shigeyuki pressed the action. In the end Pinca took home a decision over his Japanese opponent.
Vuyisile Colossa and Frankie Giorgi put on what had to be the fight of the night. Both fighters pressed the action and had some very solid and exciting exchanges that showed of some tremendous speed. The fight was tightly contested from start to finish and when it was over it could have easily gone to either fighter, but the judges ruled in favor of Georgi. The win is huge for the Australian fighter as many people predicted that the finals would feature Buakaw vs. Colossa, but with this victory, Giorgi has to be considered the new favorite to meet Buakaw in the finals.
All of the tournament bouts featured some exciting action. The 154lb (70kg) tournament was rounded out by Abraham Roqueni edging out Jose Barradas via decision and Mickael Piscitello defeating Hafid El Boustati via decision. The 147lb (67kg) tournament was rounded out by Mosab Amarani defeating Ibrahim Chiahouvia via decision and Dongsu Kim delivering a vicious knockout over Houcine Bennoui.
