Muay Thai legend John Wayne Parr will be taking on Jordan Tai at Boonchu Cup: Caged Muay Thai Series on June 23, 2012. The event is different than other Muay Thai events as it will be fought in a cage as the name indicated and with 4 oz gloves. For critics of MMA, it can’t get any better than this. All stand up fighting with those little 4 oz gloves that make knockouts a regular occurrence. We asked Parr what brought on the Boonchu Cup and he stated the following:
“The reason I want to do this is because I am a massive fan of UFC, I buy all the pay per views and enjoy just how tough these fighters are. I would love to be a UFC fighter but I am too old to learn the ground and would get crushed against someone with good ground. Laying in bed I thought of it, I really want to do this, what about I hire the cage and just do it my rules. So many people I talk to over the last 10 years all say the same "love the cage, hate when they go to the ground", problem is now solved. Expect to see exciting fights where if you’re not on your game you’re going to get knocked out. Also boring fights are now going to be exciting because they will be over faster. Really looking forward to using my hands in the clinch with the gloves on and working different tricks after catching a kick. I hope this takes off and us Muay Thai guys get the same respect as the MMA guys. It's cage fighting, with the respect of Muay Thai.”
Muay Thai action with 4 oz gloves, what’s not to love? It should be an exciting night of fights from start to finish. It will also be interesting to see if stand up fighting with 4 oz gloves is what Muay Thai needed to go more mainstream.
