The Challenger Muaythai blog - Vuyisile Colossa

by Vuyisile Colossa
I learned about The Challenger in February of this year. I was immediately excited, because I felt this was what I needed in my career. We arrived at the house and I had no idea who the other competitors would be, but as soon as I met everyone I recognized a few faces and it was easy to settle in.

I ended up being the first fight of the show because I had the best weapon of the week. I wasn't looking to fight first if anything I wanted to see  what everyone else had to offer and I really didn't know what to expect from the show. You never want to risk being the first one going home and no one wanted to leave early. I wanted to stay as long as possible so that I could see how the show progressed.

THE FIGHT
I picked Michael Corley as my opponent, honestly it was a challenge because I had never seen him fight before. The decision was a bit thought, but a wise one. I had my eye on different fighters, but it was hard to decide as everyone was just settling in with their training, but Michael was number one.

In the first round with Corley I wanted to break his confidence not let him get momentum. It is hard when you fight someone you have never seen fight before, when they have momentum it will be a long night. The second round was the same strategy, but he tried to establish himself with elbows also trying to muscle his way into the fight so I had to keep on punching him harder and harder. In the third I thought okay , let's see if his legs can take kicks or not ? In the first two rounds I did a lot of body punches to slow him down, he didn't like low kicks I just kept on throwing them until he couldn't take it.

AFTERMATH
This first fight was the hardest fight on the show because it was the first one , we didn't know what takes place behind the set, it was more mentally challenging than physically. I would say toughest one, after that fight everyone knew what would take place and they had more time to prepare themselves for the behind the set stuff. Of course if I were to have gone out first everyone would've been happy, knowing that one of the strongest fighters his out.
