Results and Recap: Glory World Series "First 16"

The Glory World Series “First 16” took place yesterday in Stockholm, Sweden and the opening round tournament fights delivered nothing but excitement. With big names like Giorgio Petrosyan, Albert Kraus, Dzhabar Askerov, Tim Thomas, Fabio Pinca, and Robin van Roosmalen in the tournament there was much anticipation.

Petrosyan advanced to the Glory World Series "Final 8" by defeating Fabio Pinca via unanimous decision. Pinca made it a competitive fight, but in the end Petrosyan was just the better fighter. Petrosyan is considered by many to be the tournament favorite.

Kraus advanced to the "Final 8" by earning a unanimous decision over Mohammed El-Mir in a fight that saw Kraus press the action from start to finish and repeatedly score with his hands. El-Mir spent most of his time backed up against the ropes throwing the occasional strike after covering up and trying to avoid whatever attack Kraus was throwing.

Sanny Dahlbeck and Warren Stevelmans put on one of the night’s most entertaining fights, going back and forth for three rounds. Despite Stevelmans’ pressure, Dahlbeck was able to land the cleaner strikes and took home the judges decision to advance in the tournament.

Ky Hollenbeck scored the only stoppage victory of the tournaments opening round over Michael Corley. A right hand from Hollenbeck caught Corley early and stunned him and the referee gave him a standing eight count. After the action resumed Hollenbeck continued to apply the pressure and unleashed a flurry of punches and the referee jumped in and stopped the fight. Corley did not seem happy with the stoppage, but none the less Hollenbeck advances to the tournaments next round.

David Kira defeated Kem Sitsongpeenong by unanimous decision in a close fight. Kira scored a first round knock down after connecting with a high kick. Kem fought hard in the second round and looked good to start the third, but about mid way through the third round Kira began to find a home for his punches.

Robin van Roosmalen and Dzhabar Askerov electrified the crowd with a back and forth technical fight. They both looked to start with their hands and end with solid leg of body kicks. The fight was close but the judges awarded the decision victory to van Roosmalen.

Tim Thomas and Dennis Schneidmiller fought back and forth for three rounds with Schneidmiller being the aggressor. Thomas, however, worked a nice counter attack and when it was over the judges awarded the decision to Thomas.

In the tournament’s first bout Shemsi Beqiri scored a split decision victory over Yoshihiro Sato. Beqiri started off strong while Sato picked things up late in the bout, but apparently it was too little too late for Sato.

In non tournament bouts Nieky Holzken scored a third round stoppage over Alex Harris after knocking him down three times. Gokhan Saki scored a knockout victory over Carter Williams. In the main event Semmy Schilt man handled Errol Zimmerman from start to finish, forcing Zimmerman’s corner to throw in the towel.
