Roli Delgado talks upcoming Muay Thai fight with Turan Hasanov

On January 14th, Friday Night Fights will start the 2011 year off with an action packed night of Muay Thai fights. On the card will be a fight featuring tough and talented youngster Turan Hasanov against Roli Delgado. You read correctly, Roli Delgado of The Ultimate Fighter and UFC fame.

The MMA fighter, is likely recognized by most as a Jiu-Jitsu fighter, but as he told Muay Thai Authority he plans to show everyone he is a Muay Thai fighter as well. We had a chance to ask Roli a few quick questions, and here are his responses regarding his upcoming Muay Thai fight.

MTA: Your known as an MMA fighter to most, what prompted you to take a Muay Thai fight?

Roli: Well ever since I started boxing & working with Aaron fisher, I started to have a real appreciation of Muay Thai. Its something I always wanted to do and it gave me another excuse to visit CT!

MTA: Since you are preparing for a Muay Thai fight, is Muay Thai strictly your focus during training or do you find time to train your Jiu Jitsu, and wrestling as well?

Roli: I trained almost exclusively in striking for the past month. I still taught my bjj classes, but didn't really train anything but striking for thus fight. It def helped make me a better striker.

MTA: Your fighting Turan Hasanov, can you give us a prediction for your fight?

Roli: Yes, I predict a win ;)

MTA: Do you plan on continuing to fight Muay Thai, or is MMA going to still be your primary focus?

Roli: No I don't plan on fighting Muay Thai again, there isn't any money in this sport. MMA pays better.

MTA: Most people relate you with Jiu Jitsu, what can people expect from your Muay Thai skills?

Roli: People will get to see that I didn't accumulate 25 MMA fights just doing bjj. It wont be a striker vs grappler, but striker vs striker Friday night. I'm here, in shape and on weight ready to fight.

It is always interesting to see MMA fighters enter the Muay Thai or boxing ring. There is always the question of how they will react if in trouble when they can't take someone down. Roli certainly brings attention having been a former UFC fighter. The attention is welcomed in the Muay Thai community, and hopefully if more fighters who have fought in high profile organizations feel like testing their stand up skills they continue to come to Muay Thai.
