Back in January WBC Muay Thai sent out an open letter regarding the start of National Rankings. In the letter they provided guidelines for what fights count towards rankings, and where to e-mail your information to.
The rankings were released in late February, and there were some that took issue with them. After speaking with WBC Muay Thai U.S.A. President John Baker, it seems that there was an error with the e-mail address originally provided. There were no e-mails received by WBC Muay Thai regarding the rankings. If you submitted your information it was not received, and the rankings were produced with whatever information was present to WBC Muay Thai. The United States is the first nation that this is being done with and should pave the way for other nations. It will likely take time to develop rankings that most would consider adequate, but it cant be done without help from the fighters and them providing their information.
Rankings are an important part of any sport, it is a way for fans to measure fighters, it is a way for fighters to market themselves, and although no ranking system is ever perfect in the combat sports world it is a must. It creates debate, stirs up a buzz, and helps push forward the sport.
