Results and Recap: Bangkok Fight Night 11

by William Felch
The night's main event featured the return of Atlanta's Stephen Richards as he took on Cyrus Washington, Richards had not fought in over a year recovering from a broken arm. From the start of the fight it was clear Washington wanted to establish control as he looked to connect with some hard shots and flashy spinning back kicks to the midsection of Richards. Richards used his boxing, specifically his jab to try and slow Washington down, but Washington was still able to land some hard strikes to body and head of Richards. Both fighters went toe-to-toe the entire fight, Washington connected with some solid elbows in the fight, however, Washington really looked to put his stamp on the fight when in the third round he knocked Richards down with a hard right. Richards was able to recover from the knockdown and
using his boxing to close the gap and clinch with Richards. In the fifth and final round both fighters still had plenty of gas left in their tanks and didn't slow down one bit, exchanging technical strikes until final bell sounded. It seemed as if Washington had done enough to pull out the decision, especially with the knockdown in the third round of a close fight. When the final verdict was announced it was a surprise to many, but no one was more surprised than Washington as the judges ruled the fight a draw.

In the night's co-main event Anthony Nieves and Chris Clodfelter met to settle some unfinished business. The pair previously fought back in 2009, but their bout was declared a no contest after an elbow from Nieves struck Clodfelter in the back of the head and he could not continue. It took no time for the action to get started in this fight, as soon as the opening bell rang Clodfelter was on the attack. Nieves initated the clinch and went to work with some elbows and knees. Clodfelter tossed Nieves to the mat, but immediately after standing up Nieves quickly engaged the clinch and landed three solid knees to Clodfelters head which ended the bout. With the win Nieves scores an impressive finish after year long layoff from fighting Muay Thai.
