Results and Recap: Challenger 3 - Jawbreaker

Promoter Mike Miles hosted the sold out “Challenger 3 – JAWBREAKER” event on Saturday January 28th at the Century Casino in Calgary. The event featured Team Canada vs. Team Thailand in what was a series of exciting bouts. The nights’ professional bouts were sanctioned by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission (CCSC) and the World Muaythai Council (WMC). The amateur bouts were sanctioned by the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) and Muaythai Alberta (MA).

In the night’s main event Canada’s Jesse Miles took on Thailand’s Wattana Sit Jor. The opening round of the fight saw both fighters feel each other out and not over commit to anything. The action started to pick up in the second round, Miles was successful with kick early on before both fighters started letting their limbs fly. Both fighters were able to avoid one another’s attacks for the most part. Wattana scored the first big blow of the fight when a right hand sent Miles to the canvas. Miles popped back up instantly and when the fight was resumed it was clear Wattana was ready to end the bout as he darted across the ring trying to deliver a flying knee, which Miles avoided. Miles survived the round as he stifled Wattana’s offense by closing the distance, smothering him and not allowing him to be successful with his strikes.

The tables turned in round three as Miles was back on his game. Midway through the bout Miles connected with a spinning back elbow that dropped Wattana and opened up a cut on his cheek. Wattana popped back up and ready to continue after the eight count, much as Wattana had tried to finish Miles after his knockdown in the second round Miles returned the favor. Wattana was initially able to avoid some of the punches until a right hand from Miles got through his guard and was immediately followed by a left hook that sent Wattana down for good. The third round knockout for Jesse Miles is a great way for him to start his 2012 campaign.

Sandra Bastian looked to welcome American Kristina Alvarez as she made her pro debut. Alvarez kept busy in round one as he threw punches in bunches, Bastian in return tried to answer with leg kicks. In the second round Bastian began to put pressure on Alvarez and when in the clinch she was able to deliver some solid knees. Bastian continued to press the action until the fight was stopped near the end of the second round giving Sandra Bastian the victory.

Peter Arbeau and Don Pinyo Muaythai met in the first of the three Canada vs. Thailand bouts. The bout was tightly contested, Arbeau was able to strike first on several occasions when in the clinch. A cut opened up on Arbeau’s cheek and Don Pinyo saw the bulls-eye and tried to target it as much as possible. The fight ended up in the judges hands and they awarded Peter Arbeau a split decision victory.

Canadian representative Hakeem Dawodu and Thai representative Parnpetch Petch met in a close fight. Both fighters were more than willing to exchange and clearly favored kicks and knees. Going toe to toe the entire fight got the crowd roaring and when it was over a standing ovation for both fighters followed form the audience. In the end Dawodu took home a very tight split decision victory.

In the first of the three Canada vs. Thailand bouts Phil Leier and Thanasak Petch Taling Ngarm locked horns. The first round had both fighters feeling each other out, but once the second round started things started to pick up. Thanasak pressed the action and low kicks were his strategy, Leier did a good job checking most of the kicks, but Thanasak double up on one of his kicks catching Leier on the thigh and sending him to the canvas. Leier was able to get back up, but Thanasak immediately went in for the kill and went for the leg again. After a few exchanges another crushing leg kick connected and Leier went down for good giving Thanasak the second round (T)KO.
