UPDATE: Result of Dave Nielsen vs. Ryan Madigan title fight over turned to a No Contest by WBC Muay Thai

UPDATE 12/13/12: The WBC has not overturned the result and Dave Nielsen's victory over Ryan Madigan stands. Dave is the current WBC Muay Thai USA National Champion at cruiserweight.

WBC Muay Thai informed Muay Thai Authority that they have over turned the outcome of the fight between Dave Nielsen and Ryan Madigan at the WCK Muay Thai “Champion of Champions” event on August 18th to a no contest. The bout between Nielsen and Madigan was the co-main event on the “Champion of Champions” fight card which was headlined by Miriam Nakamoto vs. Julie Kitchen.

Nielsen was declared the winner via KO and awarded the WBC Muay Thai USA Cruiserweight Championship. There was much debate, however, as to the legality of the finishing sequence. The debate centered on if Madigan was kicked while he was getting up from a sweep that had occurred and should have been considered a downed fighter.

The WBC has ruled that Madigan was in fact a downed fighter and the referee should have moved in and halted the action allowing Madigan back to his feet and then restarted the action. The result means that the WBC Muay Thai USA Cruiserweight Championship remains vacant. There is no word on if or when the fighters will meet for a re-match.

The decision for of the outcome belonged to the WBC sine the event took place on Native American territory at Pala Casino in Pala, CA. The California Athletic Commission was not present as they do not have jurisdiction on Native American territory and are only present if the promoter request they be there. If the state athletic commission had been present or the fight had not taken place on Native American territory then they would be responsible for the ruling on the situation.
