Simon “Bad Bwoy” Marcus will return to action against Chidi Njokuani this Saturday at Push Kick Promotions “World Stand Off 5” at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. For this fight Marcus will be wearing fight shorts with Trayvon written on the front in honor of Trayvon Martin.
For those not familiar with the Trayvon Martin case it was a highly controversial shooting that took place in February of 2012. Martin was shot by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Martin was walking through the neighborhood where he was staying at temporarily when Zimmerman followed him because he thought he looked suspicious. Martin confronted him about being followed and a scuffle ensued with Zimmerman shooting Martin. The shooting quickly gained national attention as Martin was just 17 years old when he died. The shooting quickly became a hot topic from everything regarding race to stand your ground laws.
In July of 2013 after a month long trial George Zimmerman was acquitted of second degree murder and manslaughter. The verdict was as controversial as the shooting and many supporters of Martin feel justice was not served.
When asked why he was wearing the Trayvon shorts Marcus replied, “I’m wearing the shorts to honor Trayvon Martin and his family. He was murdered by George Zimmerman and Zimmerman got away with it. Trayvon was a fighter until the end, he was being followed by an unknown man and he stood his ground and in the end Zimmerman shot him because Trayvon fought back. I respect him to the fullest for not letting himself be stereotyped and treated like a criminal because of his race or his clothes. I don’t want him to be forgotten because this type of thing happens a lot and after all the media frenzy is over the victims get forgotten.”
