As many of you may have heard by now, on Sunday August 21st some of America's finest Muay Thai fighters gathered together at a Krispy Kreme in Las Vegas, NV to partake in a donut eating contest. The entire competition line up included Kevin Ross (WBC Muay Thai international champion), Ky Hollenbeck (WBC Muay Thai world champion), Joe Schilling (WBC Muay Thai national champion and MTAA champion), Jason Andrada (amateur fighter), Mark Beecher (Muay Thai trainer) and Nathan Aripez (Founder of Muay Thai Authority).
The rules were simple, whoever ate the most donuts in a 20 minute time span would be the Muay Thai Authority Donut Throwdown champion. Each competitor started with a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and from the start it was clear that Beecher was on a mission. He started by eating two donuts at a time, meanwhile the rest of the field seemed to be pacing themselves. Through the midway point of the event Hollenbeck was catching up to Beecher, while Aripez was clearly done. Ross continued eating at a nice pace and it looked as if his plan of would pay dividends at the end as most were starting to feel the sugar effects midway through the competition.
With about eight minutes left former UFC fighter and The Ultimate Fighter alumni Cody McKenzie jumped into the contest as an unofficial contestant and put down an entire dozen in five minutes, but that was twelve donuts too fast as he bowed out of the competition as quickly as he entered it.
A last minute addition, Joe Schilling began to make his move as time wound down when he started triple stacking his donuts and eating them. Schilling and Beecher each finished their dozen and began to eat the left over donuts Aripez was holding. With the countdown starting Schilling and Beecher both put down their 14th donut and with about ten seconds left it seemed things would end up in a tie. Like a true competitor Schilling reached over as the countdown was at around five seconds, grabbed one more donut and shoved it in his mouth as the clock reached zero. With that one donut Schilling edged Beecher 15-14 in the final seconds. The last second heroics by Schilling will likely go down in history with the likes of Jordan's buzzer beater over Byron Russell to help the Bulls beat the Jazz in the NBA finals, Derek Fisher's 0.4 second buzzer beater to help the Lakers beat the San Antonio Spurs, Kirk Gibson's game winning home run to help the Dodgers beat the Oakland A's in the 1988 world series and many other last second heroics we have seen in sports.
Official Results:
Joe Schilling - 15
Mark Beecher - 14
Ky Hollenbeck - 12
Kevin Ross - 10
Jason Andrada - 8
Nathan Aripez - 5
