Glory 24 Results: Schilling Wins, Adegbuyi Takes Heavyweight Tournament

Glory 24 took place last night in Denver, CO and fight fans were ready to see Joe Schlling return to the Glory ring. Schilling was originally slated to fight middleweight champion Artem Levin, but an injury forced a change a few weeks back and Jason Wilnis stepped in to fight Schilling.

These two fighters came out looking to cause some damage, both were ripping into each other. Schilling established himself first as he was faster and more accurate. Early in the second round a left hook from Schilling dropped Wilnis. Despite tasting the canvas, Wilnis showed what he was made of by storming back into the fight and hurting Schilling with an overhand right that buckled him. Wilnis seemed to have a chance to end the fight and he continued to attack Schilling who wisely clinched and slowed things down.

It seemed things were ready for a wild third round, but Wilnis was unable to answer the bell for the final round after he suffered a badly broken toe in the second round. Schilling has now won two consecutive fights  for Glory and if he gets his way his third will be against Artem Levin.

In the night's heavyweight contender tournament Benjamin Adegbuyi and Jahfarr Wilnis punched their tickets to the tournament final by winning their semi-final bouts with leg kick (T)KO's. In the final the two big men didn't slow down, despite seeming fatigued they fought for three rounds and left everything in the ring. It was a close fight and Adegbuyi walked away with a split decision win and a chance to dethrone Glory Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven.

Dustin Jacoby scored a huge win over Glory veteran Wayne Barrett. Jacoby punished Barrett to the head and body throughout the fight. Barrett started to fatigue early and as Jacoby continued to push the pace it was too much for Barrett. In the third round punches sent Barrett to the canvas where he was counted out by the referee. With the win Jacoby has now won three straight, while Barrett drops his fourth consecutive bout.

Glory 24: Denver Fight Card

Glory 24 in Denver has had some major changes since it was initially announced. The main event was originally supposed to be the final bout in the trilogy between Joe Schilling and Artem Levin, but an elbow injury to Levin canceled those plans. Schilling will now face Jason Wilnis instead of Levin.

Wilnis was on a three fight win streak recently, that ended at Glory 20 when he lost a decision to Simon Marcus in the final of the Glory Middleweight Contender Tournament. Before his bout with Schiling he is scheduled to fight David Keclik on September 18 at FFC 19 in Austria.

Pat Barry was originally slated to fight as part of the co-main event on the card, but an injury has forced the former UFC fighter off as well. The bout would have been his second under Glory. Instead of Barry in action the co-main event will now feature Dustin Jacoby vs. Wayne Barrett

Jacoby is coming off a tournament win at Glory 23 in Las Vegas. Jacoby defeated Ariel Sepulveda and Casey Greene by KO on the night to win the tournament and end a four fight losing streak. Barrett will be looking to end a three fight skid when he meets Jacoby. He last competed in the middleweight contender tournament at Glory 20, where he lost in the tournament semi-finals to Simon Marcus by decision. Barrett found early success in his career going 5-0 with four of those wins coming by stoppage, but has not been able to break through against the top tier of the division when going the distance, all three of his recent losses have been by decision.

Glory 24 will also feature a Heavyweight Tournament. The semi-final match ups are Benjamin Adegbuyi vs. Mladen Brestovac and Ben Edwards vs. Jahfarr Wilnis.

Glory 24 takes place on October 9th in Denver, Colorado.

Joe Schilling vs. Robert Thomas added to Glory 19

The Glory 19 fight card continues to grow. The event which will take place February 6th at the  Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia has added Joe Schilling vs. Robert Thomas.

Schilling recently returned to MMA with a vicious knockout of Melvin Manhoef under the Bellator promotion. His last action in Kickboxing was at Glory: Last Man Standing this past June when he made it to the finals of the eight-man one night tournament before coming up short against Artem Levin for the Glory Middleweight Championship. The pair have now split their match ups and it is safe to say that with a win against Thomas, Schilling will get a shot at Levin's belt.

Thomas is one of Canada's up and coming fighters. He was last in action at Glory 18 when he scored a KO over veteran Mike Lemaire. The only two losses of Thomas's career have come to current Glory Middleweight Champion Artem Levin and top ranked Glory fighter Alex Perreira.

Fight Card:

Main Card:
Rico Verhoeven vs Errol Zimmerman
Joe Schilling vs Robert Thomas

Welterweight Tournament
Nieky Holzken vs Murthel Groenhart

Glory Last Man Standing Results

Glory "Last Man Standing" took place Saturday, June 21st. The event was Glory's first PPV event. The highlight of the event was the middleweight 8-man tournament to crown the division's champion.

The tournament final featured a re-match between Artem Levin and Joe Schilling. Levin defeated Alex Pereira and Filip Verlinden by unanimous decision to punch his ticket to the final, while Schilling had a more controversial path to the finals. in his quarter final bout with Simon Marcus, Schilling was knocked down in the second round and when the fight went to the judges score cards it seemed Marcus had once again defeated Schilling. The judges, however, ruled the fight a controversial draw as many though Marcus had done what he needed to move on. In the extra round Marcus was deducted a point with 40 seconds remaining the round for spitting out his mouth piece. Knowing he needed a knockout to win Marcus rushed Schilling and with 20 seconds left walked into a Schilling right hand that put  his lights out and tournament hopes on the back burner.

In the semi-finals Wayne Barrett seemed to have done enough to win a decision over Schilling, but once again Schilling was awarded a decision that many up in arms. The judges declared Schilling the winner by split decision. In the final Artem Levin picked away at Schilling and scored a knockdown over him. In the third round of their bout Levin was oddly deducted a point for clinching, but fortunately for Levin he had built up such a huge lead on the judges score cards that it did not affect the final out come and Levin was declared the winner by unanimous decision

In the night's other title fights Rico Verhoeven was crowned the heavyweight champion after a decision with in which he outworked Daniel Ghita, and Joseph Valtellini defeated Marc De Bonte to claim the welterweight championship. Valtellini and De Bonte fought five hard rounds and both men tasted the canvas in the bout but neither refused to concede defeat until the judges rendered their verdict. It was a huge win for Valtellini who in the past two years has gone from an unknown talent to world champion.

Wayne Barrett talks win over Joe Schilling at Glory 12

Wayne Barrett is coming fresh of a unanimous decision victory over Joe Schilling at Glory 12. It was a huge victory for Barrett, going into the fight he had only three professional fights compared to Schilling’s 20.

Barrett knocked Schilling down twice in the bout and survived a third round rally by Schilling which saw him knocked down by knee. We were able to catch up with Barrett and talk about his recent victory and his future plans.

MTA: Wayne huge win this weekend at Glory 12. How are you feeling after that victory?

Wayne: I feel ok really disappointed in my performance but thankful.

MTA: Going into the fight Joe Schilling had said something along the lines that you weren’t on his level. Having only had three pro fights going into the fight, what helps give you the confidence to go in and face a fighter with more than six times the amount of pro fights you have?

Wayne: What helps me is my belief in God, my team and my training.

MTA: What do you think was your advantage in the fight; do you think it was your boxing?

Wayne: My boxing was the advantage this fight for sure. Funny I wanted to kick more this fight but sometimes you have to take what you can.

MTA: It was an exciting fight and going into the third round it was clear you were in control with your two knockdowns. Were you fairly confident you were winning the fight come the third round?

Wayne: I knew I was up 2 rounds to none going into the 3rd. But Joe is a vet and knows how to make the fight ruff.

MTA: With you being up most likely on the score cards why risk the win by being as aggressive as you were?

Wayne: Glory and myself love knock outs and I wanted this fight really bad, I view it as the only way to win.

MTA: He caught you with that knee and you recovered well. Were you worried at all that it might have helped him even things out and maybe give him the win?

Wayne: The knee was a stupid mistake I made in the ring. I was dizzy lol so maybe a 4th round not because of him but I knew that when the fans like a fight and drama unfolds a 4th round is given for ratings.

MTA: You looked bigger, more muscular this fight, did you bulk up for this fight?

Wayne: I was actually smaller lol. I was the lightest I ever been for a match. I think that's what made the fight harder than it had to be but this camp was full of adversity.

MTA: So what is next for you Wayne are you looking for a little break or do you want to get right back in the ring?

Wayne: It’s up too Glory I want to build a name in the sport one fight at a time. I will run it by my coaches and we work together to say what's best.

MTA: If you could choose your next opponent who would it be and why?

Wayne: I don't call people out but I won't turn down a fight as long as I am healthy.

MTA: It has been a hell of a year for you, what is your best memory so far?

Wayne: The Mike Lemaire fight has to be the best memory for me still.

MTA: Any words for your supporters and fans?

Wayne: Everyone says follow your dream, but I want the fans to know that your real dream makes you happy when you think about it. Separate yourself from negative people and create your own world that you control.

Glory 12 Results and Recap: Andy Ristie shocks the world with two huge knockouts

Glory 12 took place tonight in New York and it was a night full of surprises. In the Glory lightweight tournament most were expecting to see a tournament final featuring Giorgio Petrosyan who has not lost since 2007, but Andy Ristie had other plans. In a fight that was pretty even things changed in a heartbeat in the third round when Ristie landed a left uppercut that knocked Petrosyan out. Despite Petrosyan's effort to get back to his feet he was clearly on wobbly legs and could not continue.

In the night’s other semi-final bout Robin van Roosmalen out pointed Davit Kiria for three rounds to win a unanimous decision. In the final, however, van Roosmalen would not see things go his way. Not only did Ristie not get the memo that Petrosyan was supposed to win this tournament, he also didn’t get the memo that van Roosmalen is a wrecking machine not to be messed with. Ristie knocked van Roosmalen down in round one and then again in round two with van Roosmalen not being able to answer the referee’s count in the second round thus giving Ristie the win. This was a huge night for Ristie as he not only beat the top two fighters in Glory’s lightweight division, but he knocked them both out.

In other action Glory middleweight tournament champion Joe Schilling took on Wayne Barrett. Schilling was considered the favorite, but like with Ristie it seems that Barrett did not get the memo. This was Barrett’s fourth pro fight, but you wouldn’t know it as he looked confident in the ring. Barrett struck first in the second round when he knocked Schilling down not once, but twice.
The first knockdown came from an over hand right and the second early in round two and the second from a right hook as the round ended. In the third round Schilling was able to gain some ground back when he connected with a knee that dropped Barrett, but he was able to beat the count. The fight went to the judges and Barrett was awarded a unanimous decision victory in a huge win for his young career.

In another of the night’s super fights Australian Ben Edwards scored a third round knockout over Moroccan Jamal Ben Saddik. In the tournament reserve bout American Ky Hollenbeck used his unorthodox style to out point late replacement Warren Stevelmans to earn a unanimous decision victory.

In the night’s under card Francois Ambang scored a (T)KO over Eddie Walker due to leg kicks in the third round and Brian Collette scored a tremendous head kick knockout over Warren Thompson in the first round. Artem Vakhitov also scored a unanimous decision over Nenad Pagonis and Saulo Cavalari scored a devastating knockout over Mourad Bouzidi.

Steve Wakeling out of Glory 10 middleweight tournament, Kengo Shimizu now set to face Joe Schilling

Late last week visa issues forced the UK's Jordan Watson out of his Glory 10 fight with Albert Kraus and now another one of the the UK's top names has fallen victim to visa issues. Steve Wakeling has been forced out of his fight against Joe Schilling in the semi-finals of the Glory middleweight four man tournament. Stepping in to replace Wakeling is Japan's Kengo Shimizu.

Shimizu was originally set to face Wayne Barrett in the tournament reserve bout, but now has the chance shock the world by officially being entered into the four man tournament. He will have his work cut out for him against Schilling, and a win over the Los Angeles based fighter should be considered an upset.

With Shimizu now in the tournament, Barrett will face Rob Plotkin in the tournament reserve bout. Plotkin was last in action on the Glory 9 under card when he defeated Casey Greene by first round (T)KO.

Top 10 Knockouts

Muay Thai Authority started almost three years ago with the goal of providing coverage that was lacking for the North American Muay Thai scene. In that time there have been many spectacular moments, so we have decided to do a top ten list and our first is the top ten knockouts by North American fighters since we started covering the sports of Muay Thai and Kickboxing. The criteria we followed was simple, if the fighter was based in North America, had a spectacular knockout, and the fight was in North America then he was eligible.

Video was available online for six of the ten fights, although not all of it is the best quality. To watch the video of the fights available click on the match up. Make sure to let us know what you think of these KO's or if there is any KO you think should have made the list.

10. Simon Marcus vs. Sadibou Sy
Simon Marcus and Sadibou Sy met on December 1, 2012 in the main event of Muay Thai in America: In Honor of the King. Everyone watching expected Marcus to come out on top and, despite Sy looking good in the first two rounds, Marcus was able to get inside in the third round and land two elbows that sent Sy to the canvas. The right-left-elbow combination was as clean as they come when it comes to landing an elbow combination.

9. Troy Sheridan vs. Deshawn Robinson
Troy Sheridan and Deshawn Robinson met in the semi-finals of the Battle of the Pros tournament in New York on September 13, 2012. Robinson started the fight off strong and seemed to have Sheridan in trouble early, but Sheridan kept calm and collected and took advantage of the right opportunity when it presented itself. Robinson got a little too confident and dropped his hands as a huge left from Sheridan came in and ended his night.

8. Joe Schiling vs. Brandon Banda
Joe Schilling promised that Brandon Banda would not make it out of the first round when they met August 20, 2011 at Lion Fight Promotions “Battle in the Desert 3” and he kept his word. After a brief feeling out process, Schilling began to find his range. Around the midway point of the first round, Schilling got inside and connected with a knee to the chin of Banda that put his lights out for good.

7. Ky Hollenbeck vs. Cyrus Washington
Ky Hollenbeck and Cyrus Washington fought on April 28, 2012 in San Francisco, CA for Legends, a San Franicisco based event. It didn’t take long for Hollenbeck to come out on top, as he applied the pressure early in the bout. After about a minute of action Hollenbeck connected with a spinning back fist that floored Washington and left him down face first on the canvas.

6. Romie Adanza vs. Thanit “Boom” Whattanaya
Romie Adanza and Thanit “Boom” Whattanaya met under the WCK Muay Thai banner on May 28, 2011 in Pala, CA. After two action packed back and forth rounds, Adanza was able to find the opening he needed to end the fight in the third round. Adanza started the third round with a flurry, but Whattanaya was more than willing to fire back. In the middle of a wild exchange, a left knee from Adanza clipped Whattanaya leaving him out cold.

5. Baxter Humby vs. Dominik Zidov (98 minutes into video)
Baxter Humby and Dominik Zidov met at the MPL’s inaugural event in Long Beach, CA on September 2, 2011. It took Humby less than two minutes to finish Zidov with a spinning back kick to the body that earned him a spot on ESPN’s top ten plays off the week.

4. Sheldon Gaines vs. Sam Poulton
Sheldon Gaines and Sam Poulton met in the final fight of Push Kick Promotions “World Stand Off” on March 2, 2013. Despite being the last fight of the night, those who stayed were treated to one hell of a knockout. After cutting Poulton early in the first round, Gaines then finished the fight in under a minute after a monstrous head kick sent Poulton crashing to the canvas.

3. Joseph Valtellini vs. Shawn Yarborough
Joseph Valtellini and Shawn Yarborough met in New York on March 9, 2012 under the Friday Night Fights banner. Yarborough was coming into the fight never having been stopped before. Valtellini would be the first to change that. After having knocked Yarborough down with a stiff right hand early in the first round, Valtellini cornered Yarborough and and landed a left hook that Yarborough out on his feet. Valtellini followed up with a vicious right uppercut to seal the deal and put Yarborough out for good.

2. Joey Pagliuso vs. Karlos Aldama
Joey Pagliuso and Karlos Adlama fought on May 16, 2013 at M-One “Reborn”. After a brief feeling out process, Pagliuso cornered Aldama and dropped with him some punches less than a minute into the first round. After the referee allowed the fight to continue, Pagliuso pounced on the wounded Aldama and connected with a vicious right hand that sent Aldama crashing out of the ropes and into unconsciousness. It was actually a scary scene afterwards, as Aldama had to be taken out on a stretcher, but ultimately was okay.

1. Eddie Walker vs. Joe Schilling
Eddie Walker's come from behind knockout of Joe Schilling takes the number one spot on our list. Coming into the bout on October 13, 2012 at Lion Fight 7 Eddie walker was mostly unknown to most of the Muay Thai and Kickboxing community outside of his home state of Georgia. Add the fact that Joe Schilling stated in a prefight interview that Eddie Walker was not ready to fight him and that he would not make it out of the first round, and you had all the makings of a Cinderella story. It seemed like things were going to go Schilling’s way early on, knocking Walker down with and elbow in both the first and second round, but Walker calmly got back to his feet each time to beat the referees count. Late in the second round, as Schilling tried to turn the pressure up, he backed Walker into the ropes. Walker avoided a punch from Schilling as he lunged forward and countered with a crisp and short right hand that shut out the lights of Schilling, as he crashed to the Canvas. Walker quickly cemented his name as one of North America’s heavy hitters.

Yodsanklai Fairtex (183-71-4), a fighter with legendary status in the Muay Thai community, made his Lion Fight debut earlier this year at LION FIGHT 8. He fought France’s Gregory Choplin in the main event, winning in the third round by KO. On July 26, he will face Lindsay for the new Lion Fight championship middleweight title.

“When Scott Kent asked me to come back to Las Vegas and fight for the Lion Fight middleweight title, I didn’t hesitate to say yes,” said Fairtex. “I’m excited to fight Chike Lindsay, he’s a champion and I respect him as my opponent and for taking this fight. I hope America welcomes me back this summer, and that everyone watches my fight on July 26 - I can’t wait for Lion Fight 10 and to fight for the belt.”

Lindsay (21-4) started training Muay Thai in 2003 and less than five months later won his first United States Muay Thai Association (USMTA) amateur championship title, which would be the first many titles for the Atlanta-based fighter, including the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) North American title and the World Kickboxing Association’s (WKA) North American welterweight and Eastern welterweight titles. In 2006, when Lindsay turned professional, he blazed through the ranks of the Muay Thai super welterweight division. In addition to defeating greats Mukai Moromo, Matee “Dragon Leg” Jedeepatik, and Malaipet, he also won the WBC International championship and the International Muay Thai Organization’s (IMTO) championship title in this division.

“I’m honored to headline Lion Fight 10 and to fight Yodsanklai Fairtex,” said Lindsay. “He’s a legend in Muay Thai and everyone knows he’s one of the greatest fighters in our sport, but on July 26th I’m going to be better and I can’t wait to prove it.”

In the LION FIGHT 10 much-anticipated co-main event, Kevin Ross returns to the ring looking for his third consecutive Lion Fight win after back-to-back victories over Bernie Mendieta at LION FIGHT 9 and Chris Kwiatkowski at LION FIGHT 8. Also under a long-term contract with Lion Fight, Ross is a two-time WBC Muay Thai Champion and will be facing Canadian Muay Thai prodigy Matt Embree.

The live card also features the return of 28-year old 6’2” Joe Schilling, the hugely popular fighter based in Southern California against Charles Byrd. Tiffany “Time Bomb” Van Soest, who remains undefeated (5-0) will take on Lucy Payne in a women’s bantamweight bout.

Yodsanklai vs. Chike Lindsay, Ognjen Topic vs. Coke Chunhawat, and more expected at Lion Fight 10

When Lion Fight 10 was announced a few weeks back all that was known about the main event was that Yodsanklai would be fighting; now it seems he has an opponent. Although Lion Fight has yet to make any announcement, sources close to the situation informed Muay Thai Authority that Chike Lindsay from Atlanta, GA will be fighting Yodsanklai. Also announced to fight on the card, but their opponents were initially unknown were Ognjen Topic and Joe Schilling. Topic is expected to fight Coke Chunhawat, and Schilling is expected to fight Charles Byrd. Jason Andrada and JP Cole are also expected to fight tat Lion Fight 10 which will take place July 26th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV and will air live on AXS TV. These fight are expected to join the already announced bouts of Kevin Ross vs. Matt Embree, and Tiffany Van Soest vs. Lucy Payne.

Yodsanklai is in the midst of a career resurgence. He was posted five consecutive wins including victories over Kem Sitsongpeenong, Yohan Lidon, and Gregory Choplin and is currently in what many believe to be the best shape of his life. Lindsay is currently on a five fight win streak of his own including victories over Thai legend Somluck Kamsing, Christophe Pruvost, and Malaipet Sasiprapa. This fight will undoubtedly be the toughest test of Lindsay’s career, but if he can pull out the upset if would be a huge step forward for American Muay Thai.

Topic is coming off an amazing knockout over Paowarit Sasiprapa at Lion Fight 9. The young fighter from New Jersey has already made waves in his young pro career and will look to continue the trend against Chunhawat at Lion Fight 10. Chunhawat has long been considered one of the best active Thai fighters living in North America. His nice blend of technique and speed will undoubtedly present a stern test for Topic, and both have a lot to gain from a victory.

Schilling will look to get back on the winning track as he takes on Charles Byrd of Saekson’s Muay Thai in Texas. Byrd has been active in MMA most recently, while Schilling was last fought in October when he suffered a knockout loss to Eddie Walker at Lion Fight 7.

Jason Andrada will look to move to 3-0 when he takes on JP Cole. Andrada has been impressive in his two pro fights this far winning both by stoppage.

Lion Fight has yet to make an official announcement regarding the bouts, but one is expected within the next week.

Expected Fight Card:
Yodsanklai Fairtex vs. Chike Lindsay
Kevin Ross vs. Matt Embree
Tiffany Van Soest vs. Lucy Payne
Ognjen Topic vs. Coke Chunhawat
