Lion Fight 24 Fight Card

Lion Fight 24 takes place this Friday at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, CT. The event will featured two Lion Fight Championships on the line as well as the return of Ky Hollenbeck to the promotion.

The main event will feature Ky Hollenbeck in his first appearance under the Lion Fight banner since August of 2011. Fighting Hollenbeck will be Richard Abraham, a regular on Lion Fight's east coast events.

Hollenbeck has not competed since June of 2014 when he lost to top ranked Andy Ristie by KO. Hollenbeck was undefeated when he last competed for Lion Fight, since leaving the promotion he has fought for the now defunct MPL, Legends Muay Thai Championship, and Glory. He went 5-3 after he left the promotion, although all three of his defeats were to some of the worlds top ranked fighters in Ristie, Giorgio Petrosyan, and Nieky Holzken.

The co-main event will feature lightweight title bout between Ognjen Topic and Ireland's Stephen Meleady. Both Topic and Meleady have cut their teeth fighting in Thailand and building solid reputations over there as some of the best foreigners competing. This should be a great bout between two skillful fighters that truly embody the Thai style.

The second title on the line will be Jo Nattawut's super welterweight title. Looking to take the title away from Nattawut will be the UK's Charlie Peters. Nattawut has gone 4-0 since he started competing in Lion Fight. Peters is an exciting fighter and it should be interesting to see how his style matches up with Nattawut's technical style.

Rising stars Gaston Bolanos and Chris Mauceri will also be in action at the event. Bolanos will face veteran Ben Yelle, while Mauceri will fight Nicolas Parlanti.

Lion Fight 24 takes place September 25, 2015 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, CT and will air live on AXS TV.

Fight Card:
Ky Hollenbeck vs. Richard Abraham
Ognjen Topic vs. Stephen Meleady
Jo Nattawut vs. Charlie Peters
Gaston Bolanos vs. Ben Yelle

Mauceri has been a Lion Fight regular, especially in the promotions trips to the east coast. Mauceri had one of the stiffest tests in his young career his last outing at Lion Fight 20. He has only lost twice in his career, with his other loss coming to Kevin Ross.

Pena is another regular of Lion Fight when they visit the east coast. In his last outing for the promotion at Lion Fight 20 Pena scored a nasty first round knockout of Tom Evans.

Lion Fight 20 Results and Recap

Lion Fight 20 took place at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut last night. The main event featured Jorina Baars in her first title defense. Chantal Ughi was looking to dethrone Baars, the pair had previously fought years ago in a bout that Baars won by split decision. This time around the fight was not close. From the ring of the first bell Baars established herself as the stronger and more skilled fighter. She peppered Ughi's lead leg with kicks and the third round Baars scored a knockdown that Ughi was able to recover from, but the beating continued. Ughi's leg was a mess and in between the third and fourth rounds Ughi refused to get off her stool awarding Baar's her first Lion Fight title defense. Baars remains undefeated with the win.

In the co-main event Chris Mauceri was looking to add respected Thai veteran Sittisak to his list of wins, but Sittisak had different plans. The crafty veteran proved to be too skilled and experienced for Mauceri. Through out the fight he used great defense to avoid much damage from Mauceri's strikes and his elbows were his bread and butter. Mauceri showed toughness by pressing forward throughout the fight but Sittisak's counter attacks were very accurate. It was a valiant effort by Mauceri but Sittisak was simply the better fighter on the night and walked away with a unanimous decision win.

John Nofer and Jason Andrada met in a fight that had fans excited. After a close first round Andrada started the second round strong until Nofer changed the tied with an elbow that sent Andrada to the canvas. Once Andrada was up Nofer was like a shark smelling blood in the water. Nofer continued to pour on the pressure and throw elbows. The ending came when another elbow planted Andrada on the canvas. The referee jumped in to count for a split second then waived the fight. Big win for Nofer.

In the night's other bouts Jo Nattawut notched his third straight win under the Lion Fight banner with a unanimous decision win over Richard Abraham. Gaston Bolanos added another highlight reel knockout to his resume with a spinning elbow KO over Caleb Archer in the third round of their bout. Julio Pena kicked off the night's televised bouts with a devastating knockout of Tom Evans.

Results:
Jorina Baars def. Chantal Ughi via (T)KO at 3:00 of Rd. 3
Sittisak Por. Sirichai def. Chris Mauceri via Unanimous Decision
John Nofer def. Jason Andrada via (T)KO at 2:58 of Rd. 2

Chris Mauceri talks upcoming Lion Fight 20 bout against Sittisak

Chris Mauceri will be in action this upcoming weekend at Lion Fight 20. Chris will be fighting against Sittisak in the co-main event.

Chris is coming of the biggest win of his career against Thai veteran Coke Chunhawat and will be looking to score another big win over a Thai veteran in Sittisak. We were able to catch up with Chris around Christmas time to talk about his upcoming fight with Sittisak as well as some other things in his fight career, enjoy.

MTA: You are set to fight at Lion Fight 20 against Sittisak. Facing a Thai veteran like Sittisak, how do you adjust your training?

Chris: I haven't really adjusted my training for Sittisak. Throughout my career I've always focused on improving all of my techniques as much as I could from fight to fight. I feel that trying to tailor your training to your opponent can cause you to lose track of other skills that you need to work on. I'm not much of a game planner to begin with I like to be prepared to win any way I have to.

MTA: You are coming off a huge win at Lion Fight 19 over Coke Chunhawat. How big of a win was that for you?

Chris: The win was huge for me. Coke was by far the most experienced fighter I've ever faced, and it was my first time fighting a Thai. I felt like I really needed the win because a lot of people doubted my abilities after the fight with Kevin Ross, and I was happy with how I performed. I felt that as the fight went on I was able to adjust and capitalize on openings, and use my technique instead of toughness, something that I often fall back on.

MTA: Do you see any similarities between Sittisak and Cokes's fighting style that might work in your favor for this fight?

Chris: I've only watched one of Sittisak's fights so far, but I do see some similarities between him and Coke. They are both primarily counter fighters, have strong kicks and are good at using their elbows. I think that like in the fight with Coke the clearest advantage I'll have is my boxing, but I'm comfortable kicking and clinching as well. I learned some things in the fight with Coke that I needed to work on that I think will help me a lot in this fight.

MTA: Thai fighters traditionally are known for starting slow. Do you see the early rounds as keys to victory as far as getting ahead on the score cards?

Chris: I think with American scoring it can be a good plan to try and steal the early rounds while a traditional Thai is still getting started, but I’m not really planning on it. I don't like to focus on scoring, just trying to win the fight every round, but I always like to finish strong in the fourth and fifth if the fight goes there.

MTA: You have been a regular since Lion Fight has come to east coast. How has the promotions expansion to Connecticut been beneficial to your career?

Chris: Lion Fight coming to the East coast has been amazing for me. They have the pull to bring high level fighters over here, whether it's from the West Coast or international fighters. They've been able to give me huge opportunities against world class fighters, one of the only ways I feel I can keep improving. I have a few great training partners and great coaching, but training here isn't like training at a high level gym in Thailand or something, with a bunch of world class guys to train with every day. I need tough opponents to push me and help me to keep learning.

MTA: It's the holiday season, do you indulge in all the eating of goodies that typically goes on during the holidays or has your fight preparation for Sittisak already started?

Chris: My fight preparation for Sittisak has started already; I really didn't take time off after the fight with Coke. I'll definitely make some time to enjoy the holidays and spend some time with my friends and family though. I'm never very far away from fight weight, so I can pretty much eat whatever I want over the holidays, and as long as I'm training hard it won't really affect me at all. I'm not much for unhealthy foods anyway, so I don't ever feel like I'm missing out if I have to skip dessert.

MTA: In your fight with Kevin Ross you were cut by an elbow very early and that is what eventually forced the stoppage. Is that a re-match you would really like to have?

Chris: The rematch with Kevin is definitely a fight I would like to have, because he is the guy at the top of the division right now, and that's where I want to be. I don't want to be a guy campaigning for an undeserved rematch though, I'm happy as long as I keep getting challenging fights and I'll earn my way there the way a fighter should.

MTA: Kevin is the current 140lb Lion Fight champion if you get a streak going could you make it to 140 if the title were on the line in a rematch?

Chris: Yes easily. The fight with Coke was at 140 and I made the cut no problem. I walk around about 155 so it’s not a very difficult cut for me.

MTA: How active do you want to be this coming year, what is the perfect number of fights in a year for you?

Chris: I want to be as active as possible this year. Because of the cut I got fighting Ross I wasn't able to fight as much as I wanted to in 2014, but I still was able to get three fights in. I'm hoping to fight at least 5 or 6 times in 2015, but I would fight once a month if I could ha-ha.

MTA: What would you say was your favorite Muay Thai moment in 2014 on a personal level for you?

Chris: I would have to say my favorite moment for me personally was my fight with Kevin Ross. The outcome wasn't what I wanted, but I love a good fight and to just put it all out there, there's nothing more fun than that for me, win or lose.

MTA: As a fan what was your favorite moment in the sport for 2014?

Chris: There's been so many awesome things going on in Muay Thai this year, I really don't think I can put one above the rest. I think the most exciting thing for me has just been to see the general rise in the level of American fighters. There's finally more than just a couple guys who are starting to compete at a world class level, and the sport is growing so much it's amazing to be a part of it.

MTA: A question all strikers get asked, are you considering making the jump to MMA at any point or is it only striking for you?

Chris: I actually had a MMA fight as an amateur. I trained some wrestling and Jiu Jitsu for a while, and I managed to stop a pretty skilled grappler with ground and pound in the 2nd round. It was fun, but I have no plans on going back to MMA. I love Muay Thai, and that's where I'd like to stay for the foreseeable future.

MTA: Any words for your supporters?

Chris: I'd just like to say thanks to everyone out there who supports me, all my family and friends, fans, and my team at Stockade Martial Arts, I love you all and I couldn't do it without you!

The main event will be current welterweight champion Fabio Pinca vs. Sean Kearney, and the co-main event will feature champion Caley Reece vs. Chajmaa Bellekhal. Pinca will return to defend his Lion Fight title after defeating Malaipet Sasiprapa at Lion Fight 12 in November of 2013 to win the title. Kearney will be looking to score the biggest win of his career when he steps in the ring with Pinca. Kearney has spent a lot of time in Thailand as of late and has won his last two fights. Under the Max Muay Thai promotion he defeated Sanpetch Kiatpetchnoi by KO and most recently he scored a decision victory over Iquezang Kor. Rungthanakeat at Thai Fight Vietnam. Topic will also be looking to score the biggest victory of his young and successful career when he steps into the ring against "The Thai Terminator" Rungravee Sasiprapa. Lion Fight 15 Results

Lion Fight 15 took place Friday night at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. The promotions first trip to the east coast featured a main event bout between Cosmo Alexandre and Mark Holst. Alexandre as usual put on a technical performance en route to a unanimous decision victory over Holst. With the win Alexandre has now won back to back Muay Thai Fights and is 3-1 when fighting for Lion Fight.

The co-main event featured Kevin Ross vs. Chris Mauceri and it didn’t take long for these two fighters to get the action going. Ross struck early when he connected with an upward elbow that opened up a nice sized gash on the forehead of Mauceri. The doctor analyzed the cut and allowed the fight to continue. Despite the cut Mauceri kept pressing forward and Ross was more than willing to meet him in the middle and exchange strikes. The fighters were going back and forth in a close fight until it was stopped in the third round by doctors. After a sweep by Ross the referee called for time and when they analyzed Mauceri’s cut the fight was stopped despite Mauceri’s plea to allow it to continue. With the win Ross has now won back to back fights and is set to fight Michael Thompson for the Lion Fight Super Lightweight Title on July 4th. With the loss Mauceri tastes defeat for the first time in his career and now sports a 6-1 record.

Tiffany Van Soest and Lucy Payne met in a re-match from their July bout of 2013 and unlike their first encounter this fight made it past the first round. The pair actually went the distance with Van Soest winning once again. Her movement made her a hard target for Payne and she was able to connect with several chopping leg kicks that seemed to slow Payne down. In the end the decision was originally announced as split, but it was an error and it was actually a unanimous decision wing for Van Soest who rebounds nicely after tasting defeat for the first time in her previous outing against Caley Reece.

Mohammed Lemjerdine was able to avenge his brutal KO loss to Jason Andrada at Lion Fight 15. The Connecticut based fighters knocked Andrada down twice in the first round and connected with the heavier shots throughout the fight. In the end he was awarded a unanimous decision win and likely set up a rubber match down the road for these two fighters.

Nick Chasteen tasted defeat for the first time since turning pro earlier this year. Pedro Gonzalez came into the fight with less than a weeks notice and immediately went after Chasteen as if he had nothing to lose. In the second round a barrage from Gonzalez put Chasteen in a corner and delivered elbows and punches. When they separated the referee stopped the action to check Chasteen’s cut and the bout was stopped. It is a big win for Gonzalez in his pro Muay Thai debut.

Results:
Comso Alexandre def. Mark Holst via Unanimous Decision
Kevin Ross def. Chris Mauceri via (T)KO (Cut) in Rd. 3
Tiffany Van Soest def. Lucy Payne via Unanimous Decision
Mohammed Lemjerdine def. Jason Andrada via Unanimous Decision
Pedro Gonzalez def. Nick Chasteen via (T)KO (Cut) in Rd. 2
Tim Amorim def. Tom Evans via (T)KO (Retirement) at the end of Rd. 2

Chris Mauceri talks Lion Fight 15 bout with Kevin Ross

On Friday May 23rd Chris Mauceri will easily have the biggest fight of his career. At Lion Fight 15 the young Nak Muay will look to defeat American fan favorite Kevin Ross and cement his name as one of the best up and coming Muay Thai fighters. We were able to catch up with Mauceri before his showdown with Ross and he was kind enough to answer a few questions regarding the upcoming fight.

MTA: You are fighting Kevin Ross at Lion Fight 15, what were your thoughts when you were first offered the fight?

Chris: When I was first offered the fight I was really excited. We had been told Lion Fight was looking to match a few different guys including Kevin Ross, and when they offered us the fight with Kevin we jumped on it.

MTA: Is there anything different did this training camp than other training camps?

Chris: Not planning to do anything different for this fight, just trying to train harder than ever.

MTA: How familiar are you with Kevin Ross?

Chris: I'm very familiar with Kevin Ross. He is one of my favorite fighters and I've watched as much of him as I could long before I ever knew we were fighting.

MTA: You are undefeated as a pro how important is it to you that you keep a zero in your loss column?

Chris: Being undefeated is nice, but the zero doesn't really matter to me at all. What is important to me is testing myself against the best guys I can, I want to see what I'm made of. I would sooner put it on the line against a guy like Kevin Ross than pad my record with easy fights and stay undefeated.

MTA: If you had to pick Kevin’s strength in the ring what would it be?

Chris: I would say his strength in the ring is his toughness. He's very well rounded and he's a guy who's always going to come forward and bring it no matter what.

MTA: If you had to pick Kevin’s weakness what would it be?

Chris: I don't think he has any huge weaknesses. I would say the clinch may be the weakest part of his game, but I don't think he likes to spend much time there anyway.

MTA: What do you think will be your biggest advantage in this fight?

Chris: I think my biggest advantage coming into this fight will be my confidence. I'm young and I'm excited to prove that I belong in there with guys like Kevin Ross and I'm gonna bring it to him.

MTA: Can we get a prediction for this fight?

Chris: My prediction for this fight is that it's gonna be the best fight of the night, and I'm coming home with the win.

MTA: Kevin said in an interview this fight is a lose lose for him and a win win for you, and that he only took the fight because he had no other option. What are your thoughts on that?

Chris: I can't disagree with him I guess he doesn't really have anything to gain beating someone like me and losing to me would be very bad. That being said although this fight could be considered a win win for me I don't look at it that way. To me Kevin Ross is just another opponent and a step up in competition. I want to find out if I am at that level and I believe I am. Although a loss might not hurt my reputation I would be extremely disappointed. I think he should be glad that someone wants to fight him. I'm sure there aren't many guys in the US who will step up and fight him. Even though I'm sure he would prefer and probably deserves a more well known opponents there's definitely something to be said for being able to stay active and get fights in our sport.

MTA: Any words for your supporters?

Chris: Thank you to all my family, friends, coaches and teammates and everyone else who supports me. Couldn’t do it without you guys.
