12 Rounds with Kevin Ross

by Flip English
On October 21st Kevin Ross will be fighting the dangerous Sakkedao Petchpayathai, the last man to beat his previous opponent, Muay Thai legend Saenchai SinbiMuayThai. No doubt this fight will be another grinder for Ross, a gritty test for his rugged reputation. Anytime a fighter is coming off a loss there is that added pressure to win the next one to keep the career afloat, but if your last fight was with Saenchai and your next bout with Sakkedao, I can imagine how this could be for Ross like a tornado dropping him on the path of torrential typhoon, or exiting a burning building only to enter a raging street riot outside. But before Ross crosses the Green Zone and into combat again, he is still in the eye of the hurricane, still in the calm between the old storm that was Saenchai and the new struggle that will be Sakkedao. So how is he doing? Is this training period enough time to repair the damages and prepare retaliation for a loss? We will see. Two weeks before his next performance at the M-One event at the Nokia Club in Los Angeles, Kevin grants MuayThaiAuthority.com an interview where he and I go for a dozen rounds of questioning.

Scoring Muay Thai fights, the Kevin Ross perspective

by Kevin Ross
It has been very obvious to me, especially over the past few years, that something seriously needs to be done about the judging in combat sports. Whether it be in Muay Thai, boxing or MMA we have all seen decisions that just made you question what fight the judges could have been watching.

Now having judged fights in the past I know how difficult of a job it actually is. There are so many factors that go into it that when you are just sitting in the stands, enjoying the fights, you don’t actually see. Being that close to the fight you are actually feeling the power of the strikes, the affect they have on the fighters, who’s really getting hurt, tired, etc. Not only that, think about the fact that you can watch a fight from one angle and it will be a completely different experience than if you had sat on a different side.

Kevin Ross - Thailand Blog Part 1

2010 North American Fighter of the Year winner Kevin Ross is currently in Thailand training at Sitmonchai. He will be writing a blog for fans to keep up with him here on MuayThaiAuthority.com. Enjoy.

Just finished my first week at Sitmonchai. Chaz and I landed in Bangkok around midnight Saturday. The camp is about an hour and a half taxi ride outside the city. Arrived at the camp around 1:30am and crashed out. Got woken up at 9 for breakfast, the food here is amazing, as most is in Thailand. Ended up sleeping most of the day.

Monday morning got up at 6am and did about a 5 mile run then some pad and bag work. The trainers here are really great. I love their style, boxing and low kicks, one of the big reasons I wanted to come here. The camp has a very close knit kind of feel to it. It feels like a family as opposed to a gym/business. We get done training around 9amish and have breakfast then relax until 4pm when we go for another 3-4 mile run. After that another pad work session then more bag work and clinching or sparring.

Kevin Ross talks upcoming fight with Malaipet

For anyone who has been living under a rock, the most anticipated Muay Thai fight in America will be taking place at Stand-Up Promotions King's Birthday Celebration. On December 5th at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, CA Kevin Ross and Malaipet will meet in the middle of a ring and likely put on what will become an epic battle. MuayThaiAuthority.com had the opportunity to catch up with Kevin Ross and discuss his upcoming fight with Malaipet.

MTA: You have what is going to be the biggest Muay Thai fight in the U.S. coming up on December 5th. You are going to be fighting Malaipet. How has your training for the fight been going?

Kevin: Training’s been going great, rough as always but great. Ever since I started I have trained for every fight as if it was for the world title. To me the most important fight is the next one you have coming up, so no matter who it is I train as if they are the best fighter on the planet. I give 100% every time that way win, loose or draw I know I gave it my all and won’t have any regrets.
